This week's program - CHELAN MOUNTAIN RESCUE
With Vernon Nelson, sponsored by Carin Smith
Vernon is president of Chelan County Mountain Rescue and also a Social Studies teacher at Eastmont High School. He started climbing in college and fell in love with the sport.   He was featured by Wenatchee World as a "30 under 35" last year.
His talk will be a brief history of Chelan County Mountain Rescue, their mission and what they do and highlight a few of our more recent notable missions.

Lunch is available for $12 at this and future meetings.

The Program Last Week
Former Wenatchee Rotarian Lorien Clemens, sponsored by Rachel Evey.  She eloquently and passionately explained the benefits of registering our pets with Pethub, a company she founded and manages with husband Tom Arnold, also a former club member.   She further explained how Pethub has partnered with Wenatchee Valley Humane Society to reduce the number, frequency, and cost of lost pets.  One of her PowerPoint images is shown below, along with this recent online article.  You are encouraged to learn more by watching the ZOOM video, available for a brief period.

IMAGINE ROTARY MOMENT.   Imagine how much our Carmen Bossenbrock at age 94 (currently not accepting visitors) will appreciate hearing from us, i.e. cards and letters, sent to her at P.O. Box 117, Dryden, WA 98821.
We love you Carmen, and hope you are feeling better soon.
Her address, or any other contact info you may need can be found on the ClubRunner APP for your smart phone; get it from your app store.  You will be amazed at the mountain of info at your fingertips.

Also, many local Rotarians had a blast at the Applesox game last night.  In the photo are "3 Divas and a Dude" - Robin DeRock, President, Sunrise Rotary, Wendy Dalpez, President, Rotary of the Confluence, Jill, and Charlie Brown, President Elect, East Wenatchee who threw out the first pitch.

Jill also promoted her new QR code (shown below), which, when scanned on your smart phone, leads to a Rotary page perfect for answering the question "What is Wenatchee Rotary?", when asked by friends.

COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT.    Our Rotary Foundation (TRF) Committee chair (and club secretary) Frank Clifton gave an overview of the TRF and steps to accelerate achieving the Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) Award.   For more details CLICK HERE.

One point Frank mentioned was the RI initiative EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) which encourages each Rotarian to give something to the Foundation Annual Fund every year, no matter how small.  Jill stated that this is one of her goals for her year, because these gifts can return to us in the form of future GRANTS.

Thomas Everly was greatly surprised at being presented his first Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) award by Susan Albert who transferred some of her available Foundation Transfer Points.   Susan appreciates the contributions which Thomas has made to the benefit of the club.

Our Service Project Committee chair, Gary Provo, made an appeal for project ideas so that we can imagine solutions that will benefit our community.  The club is looking for at least one service project a month for 2-5 people.    We need members to help us identify projects.   Remember this was goal #2 for the 2022-2023 year.    Contact Gary with ideas or suggestions at garyallanprovo@gmail.com .

REFUGEE UPDATE.     Wenatchee Valley Afghan Support Circle (WVASC) - Kelli Scott spoke about this opportunity to help a local refugee family from Afghanistan.  This community has shown incredible generosity and hospitality as it has welcomed refugees from war-torn Ukraine in recent months.  Now, a family that fled the Taliban in Afghanistan is making their home here and could use our help.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS ROTARY?   Camp Fire NCW council’s resident camp, Camp Zanika Lache, was established in 1932.  Camp Zanika is located on the south shore of Lake Wenatchee in the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness area.  At its founding, Camp Zanika was an all-girls camp focused on outdoor skills.  There were no permanent structures to speak of, and the campers stay in wall tents spread around the acreage.

In 1933, Kiwanis lodge was the first building to be constructed.  What is now the staff retreat was originally the kitchen, and meals were served on a deck that extended over a fair portion of what is now Mermaid Beach.  Rotary cabin was the first cabin to be built in 1935 by the Wenatchee Rotary club.   At this time, both the materials to build Rotary and the campers themselves had to be brought in by boat because there was no road yet.

F.I.N.E.    Grace Van Well showed off her Gold Medal, received for Butterfly swimming at the Summer Special Olympics, and then had a great time at Disney World.  Her proud dad Pete gladly paid the FINE.

Raz shared that it is his 55th wedding anniversary.

Mark Kulaas announced that excavation begins Monday on the Peace Pole Project at Rotary Park!

Inspirational quote from PK Subban, New Jersey Devils.

"The focus at some point, after statements have been made, needs to be on:  What are the actions?  How do we improve situations in our communities?  How do we make people feel comfortable?  And in order to get comfortable, I think you have to feel uncomfortable.  I think people need to be comfortable feeling uncomfortable.  That’s okay."

GUESTS Kelli Scott introduced Aurora Flores of Manson, a dedicated member of the school board.  You can read about her here.  She is a new candidate for PUD Commissioner.
Meliesa Tigard introduced her daughter Kathleen who works with her at Focal Point and is starting a new business of managing birthday parties for kids.

VENMO IS HERE.   Scan the QR code to get the app.
We can now use Venmo for in-club purchases or donations, such as to pay for lunch, make a donation to TRF and WRF, or even “Where in the World.”

---  DEAR APPLESAUCE  ---

Dear AppleSauce:   Why is it that when you’re driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio?
                           --       Nimrod Navigator.

Dear Double N.   Being that this is the 21st Century, so one can hear Siri let one know when one has arrived. (And people wonder why Wenatchee Rotary is considered the “Senior Citizen” club…sheesh!).

Dear Applesauce.  In the past I’ve been overwhelmed and underwhelmed.  Why can’t I just be whelmed?
                                     -- So-So Sally

Dear Sally.   Try watching a marathon of The Best of The Joy of Painting on PBS. You will be bored out of your mind, but whelmed nonetheless.
