 Volume LXXI(71) - # 38
March 24, 2022
March is Rotary's Water and Sanitation Month
THIS WEEK, MARCH 24, We meet at.....
ROCKY REACH DISCOVERY CENTER
With Bob Bauer, Educational Specialist
ZOOM #97/Hybrid #46
Sponsored by Alice Meyer.

NO ZOOM for this meeting.
Arrive early for lunch.

Join Bob Bauer Thursday, March 17, 2022 at The Discovery Center at Rocky Reach Dam
The center, previously a museum, has a new focus on education including the science behind Columbia River hydropower.  View Facebook page HERE.
The Discovery Center was originally built in 1962. With its $7.7 million upgrade, the long-running Museum of the Columbia is no more. That large gallery inside the dam powerhouse closed permanently in 2019, with many of its historic exhibits finding new homes in the Discovery Center, and others at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center.
New and restored exhibits touch on the Native American history of the Columbia. Moving an antique Native canoe from the old museum to the new one proved one of the most challenging aspects.
A new patio deck offers improved views of the dam and spillway. But the dam’s most popular attraction has to be the viewing gallery on the fish ladder, which allows migratory fish to reach their critical spawning grounds upriver. The window view has been widened and thickened, allowing better views for children and people using wheelchairs.  Rocky Reach Visitor Center is located on the west side of Rocky Reach Dam, easily accessible from Highway 97A, and offers ample parking for visitors.
Plan to arrive by 11:30 if you ordered lunch or to fellowship.  Tour will begin at Noon.
Lunch orders are closed, but if you did not order lunch, come anyway.
If you need assistance into the Discovery Center, please let President Alice know.

ROTARY GRANTS AVAILABLE.     Good News!
Your Wenatchee Rotary Community Outreach committee is excited to announce that they will be accepting spring grant applications starting April 1.  The committee members, Susan Albert, Eric Nelson, Ray Dobbs and Joe St. Jean, are pleased that, once again, the Club has allocated funds for the intent of helping our local community.  We have a tremendous “track record” of doing that in a variety of ways in the past.  The ideal projects for your committee to consider are those that provide a needed service or those that support a worthy cause.  As always, we are encouraging applications where Rotarians can be directly involved in fulfilling our motto of “Service above Self.”
The Community Outreach updated grant application can be found under “Grants” on the header section of Wenatchee Rotary’s website starting April 1.  This year’s deadline for application will be April 30 with awards announced before the end of May.

"The Cascade Killer"
With Rob Phillips

View ZOOM recording HERE (available for 2-3 weeks)
Previous APPLESEED.

The speaker was glowingly introduced by Ken Robertson.  Rob Phillips of Yakima published his first novel in 2020, and has since published two sequels.  He completed the first draft in less than a month during April that year.  Before that, he had been writing an outdoors column for the Yakima Herald-Republic since 1991 (view his latest article HERE. ).

Rob explained in entertaining and humorous detail the process he went through in writing and publishing.  He insisted that anyone can do it.  We all have a book in us.  His novels are part of a series of fiction mysteries having the same hero, Lucas McCain, a Washington State game warden (think Tom Selleck), who also gets involved with a very attractive female FBI agent named Sara Sinclair.  Luke's friends call him "The Rifleman" because of the character from the old TV series.

A few of Rob's PowerPoint images are shown below.

Hero named after this TV character.
Luke's faithful friend Jack.
Rob's wife suggested this book
to help him create characters.
He has done many book signings.
He got some good media reviews and on
occasion, outsold many better-known authors.
Advance review copies to handout.
A big day for Rob.

---  DEAR APPLESAUCE  ---

Dear AppleSauce:    How long have you been in Rotary anyway?

                                       --- Suspicious in Chelan

Dear Suspicious,  Let’s just say Don Kay asked Dear Applesauce to join at the Cheiftain’s Midnight Raid after one too many Bourbon sours. This is a reference someone of Marc Heminger’s age will understand, but someone of Sean Cooper’s will not.

Dear Applesauce,  How many of you “Applesauces” are there?

                            ---Saddle Rock Shirley

Dear Shirley,  While it may be a tempting theory that this much intelligence, wit and panache cannot be contained in a single individual, there is only one Yours Truly…the others are just voices in my head (at least that’s what Dr. Bill Murray says).
