The Golden Anniversary year of Wenatchee Rotary was celebrated in many ways. Some of these were special programs, extra edition of a newspaper, gold covered club roster with all members' pictures and a banquet celebrating the anniversary date. Don Kay was chairman of the Golden Anniversary Committee, John Warnock was in charge of our "Golden Roster" and the Apple Seed featured many stories regarding the club's first fifty years, and each ten years were highlighted in a series.

Dr. Eva Anderson and the Heritage Committee presented highlights of Wenatchee's past fifty years and how Rotary and its members were closely connected with the city's growth. The Wenatchee World published a special paper for that meeting and it chronicled our club's history.

350 Rotarians and wives attended our Fiftieth Anniversary Banquet on January 30, 1971, which featured Stanley McCaffrey, the first Vice President of Rotary International, as our speaker. he commended our club on its past achievements, but challenged us to improve in our next fifty years. Leo Lowe was the Master of Ceremonies, as he had been for the club's banquet in 1955 celebrating Rotary International's 50th Anniversary.

The four avenues of service were represented by programs during the year, the Program Committee being headed by Don Brown. Community Service featured programs of the City Engineer, Chairman of the Parks Board, Director of State Department of Revenue, Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Senator Perry Woodall, U. W. Forest Service, Chelan County P.U.D., Downtown Development and Economic Future of Wenatchee. Club Service was emphasized with classification talks, a history of the F.U.B (Fat-Ulcers-Broke) Club that exists within our club by Harry Hunter who accused President John of trying to sink the organization when he fined them for sitting together. Vocational Service meetings featured Employer-Employee relations, National Engineers' Week, Workmen's Compensation and Investment. District Governor Morgan French had kind words for our Club's achievements and he conducted a meticulous club assembly. International service meetings featured Steve Brown and Hunt Nickell, our exchange students to Denmark, and Ingrid Kallstrom, inbound exchange student from Sweden. Sandy Curtis from Wenatchee told of her year in France as a Rotary Foundation Fellow. The Japanese and South African consuls also spoke.

Our schools featured programs on football, High School Swing Choir, Orchard Jr. High Stage Band and the appearance of the Top-10 Royalty candidates for Apple Blossom Queen. At one program we had 100 Wenatchee Valley College students present and we talked together in small groups, attempting to "Bridge the Gap," which was the Rotary International theme for the year.

Activities included winning the All Service Club golf Tournament, thanks to Ray Bontemps, Joe Welty, Jr., Wally Schulke, Art Pohlman and Jack Maguire.

Our club traveled this year. We had an inter-club exchange visit to the University Club in Seattle, and the next day 40 Rotarians and wives saw the University of Washington defeat U.C.L.A. on the football field. Another visit was to the Everett club in June and we toured the Boeing plant. A full bus-load went to see a Seattle Sonics-Detroit basketball game in Seattle. Another bus was taken to the District Conference in Kamloops, B. C. The R. I. Convention was held in Sydney, Australia, and the club sent Vice President Charles Fox and his wife. The Paul Sceas and Jack Maguires also attended.

Firesides in march were attended by over 50 members. Our suit Sale, led by Joe Welty, Jr., netted a record $3,481. We spent this on youth activities. Our Christmas collection for the Salvation Army was over $400.00. Wenatchee Rotary Foundation was active and helped purchase clothing for needy children, paid dental bills for three children, made a loan at a Wenatchee Valley College student to cover tuition, provided tutoring for a 4th grade boy and many more.

The Golden Anniversary Year come to an end July 1 as the Past Presidents wheeled President John in on a stretcher, bound and gagged, to listen to sad accounts of his year. Finally John Manhart was voted into the Past Presidents' Club and Charles Fox was initiated as President for 1971-72.
