"Walt" Hampton.

The roster printed for the next Rotary year had 163 Active names. This was a year of strong growth partly because many eligible members took Senior Active status opening their classifications to new members.

Our own Wenatchee Rotarian Leo Lowe was District Governor. On August 10 Leo conducted a very educational, informative and enjoyable District Institute hosted by our close neighboring club in Chelan. Leo made his official visit at a club assembly Oct. 2 and gave a stimulating address Oct. 3. Under Leo's leadership and with Lev Craven as chairman and Al Stojowski as co-chairman, Wenatchee hosted the district conference on May 15, 16 and 17. Honored guests included Warren Kraft, Past Vice President of Rotary International and head of Rotary International Program Committee, and Victor Bouillon, incoming District Governor. Conference attendance was around 500.

On March 19 Stuart Bledsoe, Ellensburg cattleman who toured Russia on an agriculture exchange program, presented a talk and slides of his trip. So impressed were Wenatchee Rotarians that arrangements were made for Mr. Bledsoe to repeat it at the District Conference where it was one of the highlights of the three days.

The ladies were invited to several meetings and social evenings including a Valentine dinner and theatre party, and on August 13 to the home of member Ed Cadman (Orchard Avenue Opera Association) for a "Summer Evening of Words and Music" with guest artist Lyman Partridge, Past District Governor from Ellensburg.

During the year the program committee, under the leadership of R. W. "Bill" deGrasse, presented many varied, interesting and educational programs.

On April 2 Apple Blossom Queen Lynn Nicholson, Princess Sheila Hildebrand and Princess Nancy Conyers were our guests and District Governor Leo Lowe presented them with tiaras from the club. On Friday, May 1, Rotary produced the Apple Blossom Festival Coronation program in its entirety, building the stages and sets and creating the program. This was done under the chairmanship of Ed Cadman with Win Baker and Stan Stallings as assistants. Public comment indicated that the committee, with volunteer assistance from the club members, produced an outstanding coronation program.

The Suit Sale, December 5, 6 and 7, was supervised by Vice President Jim Welch and his Ways & Means Committee with Jack Maguire as sales chairman. Proceeds of nearly $2,300 with expenses of around $400 provided $1,900 for youth service activities. Club youth service activities included helping to find quarters and install a heating system for a workshop for handicapped persons; donation of $1165 to the Wenatchee YMCA for a new fireplace in their building remodeling; about $3200 was donated to the YMCA, YWCA, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Girls' State, Boys' State, high school and college activities, Little League and others.

Jack Crowl was elected President of the Wenatchee Rotary Foundation. For the first time in a number of years the Foundation came to the club for individual donations to carry on its philanthropic programs which included scholarships and loans to students and other "helping hands" where a need is indicated.

Community service activities costing about $1,100 in cash and countless hours in time included an Apple Blossom Festival parade float, support for both hospitals, $200 toward a "Welcome to Wenatchee" illuminated sign on North Wenatchee Avenue, and others.

Rotary International President, Carl Miller's emphasis on matching Rotary districts and clubs with others in far countries matched us with District 292 in New Zealand and Fiji, and with the Tauranga, New Zealand, Rotary Club. There were many interesting exchanges of publications and letters between our club and Tauranga, followed in the Spring by a visit by Wenatchee Past District Governor Ed Smith and Rotarian E. O. Allen to the District Conference of District 292 in New Zealand. While there they visited several clubs in New Zealand and Fiji. Ed and E. O. brought back tales of many fine Rotary experiences to enrich our club programs.

Many active committee chairmen and committees contributed to a year of activity in all four avenues of service. Physical improvements included new display panels for our club pennants from all over the world and new name places for our member button board.

The annual election produced a tie for Vice President between Jim Schrengohst and "Slim "Mathews. The following week "Slim" Mathews won the run-off election to become Vice President to share the administration of incoming president Jim Welch.
