This was a big year for Wenatchee Rotary Club. It was our 40th Anniversary year. The Anniversary event was the biggest celebration ever. Upon arrival everyone was given a crazy paper hat. The jive band from the college entertained with music during the meal. The meeting room and tables were decorated for a festive occasion with streamers and banners. The honorary and charter members were specially honored at the head table. The directors and District Governor sat at another head table. The past presidents were honored with a special table as were the top attendees. This day Leon Milot was especially singled out for 30 years of perfect attendance. One charter member, Frank Case, made a trip from California to be present. Dee Palmer gave the history of the Wenatchee Club, Lev Craven-40 years of fellowship, Bill Walter-attendance recognition, Ed Cadman-past presidents review, Jim Starr-presentation of plaques. The main address was given by our Governor, Dr. Lyman Partridge.
President Crowl and family attended the R. I. Convention in Miami Beach, Florida.
This year the club accumulated many fines. One of our most lucrative money makes was Joe Wood's unsolicited advertising pictures in each Apple Seed.
Everett Rotary had an exchange with Wenatchee and supplied our program on October 6. On Nov. 1 we reciprocated and sent a charger bus to Everett. Wenatchee Rotarians making the trip were: Jack Crowl, Jim Starr, Stan Grimm, Clair Vandivort, Bill Walter, Ed Smith, Bill Elder, Ray Haase, Leon Milot, Pete Van Well, Cliff Chase, Len Wooton, Ron Reimer, Myron Foster, Lev Craven, Hans Sierk, C. C. Clements, Jim Welch, Ed Cadman, Greg Bitter, Howard Elmore, Leo Lowe, Dee Palmer and Larry Handy.
Our club was fortunate to have a good program chairman in Jim Mills. Some of the year's programs were: July 21, U of W student from India, Hement Sonawah, spoke on India; Sept. 1, Clark Eckart, Seattle Vice President of Great Northern Railway, spoke on present and future plans for Great Northern; Sept. 15, District Governor Lyman Partridge's official visit; Sept. 22, Dean Katterle, Dean of Education at WSU, spoke on the Russian system of education; Oct. 13, Norman Ford, YMCA Secretary from Calcutta, India, spoke on India; Dec. 15, G. H. Lathrop, Commander of the Naval Air Station in Seattle, spoke on "Double Cross;" Feb. 9, Bert Clark of the University of Washington football staff, spoke on "Rose bowl Pictures;" Feb. 16, Larry Deal, teacher from Nigeria, spoke on Africa; Feb. 23, University of Washington Professor, Dr. Norbert Binstein, spoke on "What Next in Foreign Affairs;" May 5, Governor Albert Rosellini spoke on Washington State; May 11, Paul Malinak, Field Engineer from the Martin Co., spoke on the Titan I.C.B.M.
Again the Wenatchee Rotary's annual Suit Sale was a smashing success. Top honors went to Dr. Russell Congdon for bringing in 31 suits, 5 topcoats, 13 jackets, 11 sport shirts and a pair of boots.
Rotary purchased a microphone with a long extension cord and we inaugurated the "traveling mike." Don Kay acted as moderator and impromptu interviews were held with some members each week. We also called on someone at a different table each week to stand up and introduce everyone else at the table with name, classification and place of employment (very embarrassing at times).
Wenatchee Had a bowling match with Cashmere and won. Also in the intercity club golf meet we were the champs.
Our member, Neil Farquhar, was re-elected president of the North Central Washington Boy Scout Council.
Our club suffered some great losses during the year. On Sept. 11 Past President Wilder Jones passed away. On a later date Past President Lee B. Fuller died. Feb. 24th Claude Norton passed away. On March 20, Rotary's revered Jesse Widby was taken. Widby had served as club president in 1940--41, District Governor in 1958-59 and Rotary's International Counselor. On April 5 Tom Pybus passed away. Pybus joined Rotary Dec. 21, 1921, attended R. I. Conventions in Europe in 1931 and 1937 and was extremely proud of his classification of "Blacksmith.
