Before taking office, President Lev Craven attended the International Convention in New York City. 73 countries were represented and 15,462 Rotarians were registered for the international gathering. Rotary had over 10,000 clubs and 476,000 Rotarians world wide.
At the first board meeting of the year, John Gellatly and R. T. Congdon, MD.. were elected to honorary membership. Dr. Congdon, who held the Surgery classification in the club for many years, passed away in October.
On July 16 Gordon Wattie of Gisbourne, New Zealand, visited and praised the ROTA visitors from this district who came to his club, and presented us with a banner.
Ed Cadman accepted chairmanship of the Program Committee and a fine year of programs was enjoyed by all. The first club assembly was held July 14, and plans were made to get the Rotary year going immediately. On July 30 Dr. Richard Daugherty of W. S. C., spoke on "Early Man in Washington State"; on August 13, Mayor "Si" Simenson explained the city budget; on August 27 Dr. William Brewster of Harvard Medical School spoke on heart research; on September 24, James Cummings from Boeing spoke on the Bomark defense missile. On October 15 Phillip Lovejoy, former General Secretary of Rotary International from Utica, N. Y., addressed the club on "Historian of 2559 A. D. Looks Back"; On October 29, Rev. James T. Albertson reported on his analysis of the Arab refugee problem in Jordan after a personal tour of the area; on November 5 Joe Gandy, president of Century 21, described plans for the Seattle World's Fair; on November 19 our Congressman Walt Horan spoke on the use of chemicals in connection with food products and the need to stabilize the dollar.
Our Rotary Christmas party for children and grandchildren on December 24 played to an overflow crowd. New Year's Eve Rotary and Lions met together and Rotarian Ross Heminger told of the plans for the construction of Wells Dam.
Then, to start 1960, President Lev Craven, teller of "Cravenisms" (jokes) announced that if he didn't get any laughs in another six months he would quit telling them.
In January Irwin Jones and Wilfred Woods of Wenatchee told us about plans to get Highway 97 designated by that number from Mexico City of Fairbanks, Alaska, and for a caravan of 1,000 cars to Dawson Creek. February included a program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and a lovely Valentine party planned by Don Kay and his Social Committee. In March Jack Crowl was elected President for the coming year and Jim Starr Vice President.
PDG Jesse Widby was appointed as Rotary International Counselor for six districts located in Alaska, Western Canada and four northwestern states of the United States. He, with 24 other counselors, attended a training session at Rotary International Headquarters in Evanston Illinois.
In early August the Wenatchee Valley Clinic opened their new building at Ninth and North Chelan and Rotarian Clinic Doctors Ed Cadman, Frank Kells and Dick Mitchell were very proud as well as busy moving. Also in August Rotary International President, Harold Thomas, visited Yakima. About 200 Rotarians attended a meeting in his honor, including nine Rotarians and their wives from Wenatchee.
Rotary's Babe Ruth League Ball Team won in their league and attended our meeting August 20 in their Rotary uniforms where they were presented before the club by chairman Stub Peterson.
This fall charter member, Frank Case, moved to California; Don Kirby was president of United Good Neighbors; the Lions beat Rotary at golf.
On October 1, District Governor Ray Corner visited the club emphasizing "Putting Rotary Ideals into Business Practice". The Omak-Okanogan club sponsored an International Fellowship dinner at Okanogan November 19 which was attended by about 200 including six couples from Wenatchee. District Institute was held Nov. 14 in Chelan.
Rotary's float entry in the Apple Blossom Festival parade was built under the chairmanship of Beryl Carlan. Past President Rollie Day was this year's Apple Blossom Festival Director General.
Winding up a highly successful Rotary year in May and June ten couples and two single men attended the District Conference in Kelowna. Yaakou Avnon, Consul General of the State of Israel told us about his country. Paul Scea got a hole in one on the golf course and paid dearly for bragging about it. Joe Wood was honored for his service to Youth through the YMCA at the Y annual meeting. Jesse Widby, PDG, took over as Mayor of Wenatchee. Traffic Safety Committee Chairman, Jack Thomson, presented awards to first place winners in the Rotary Driver Training Contest for boys and girls to Mary McPhail and Dan Smoots. Rotary also financed the trip of local half-mile track star Bill Part to the Junior Chamber National Track Meet in California.
Thus ended a year during which Jack Crowl and his Suit Sale committee raised $1,543.18 net for Rotary Youth Projects.
