Our new president, Don Kirby, is a jolly sort of fellow with lots of wit and humor, even though his classification is that of "Banker." His smile is disarming and his fines were always introduced with a bit of humor that made the "victim" feel complimented that he could contribute his stipend for a worthy cause. Our good president initiated a ruling that the "early leavers" or "program dodgers" pay a 50¢ fine on their way out. It is strange how a little 50¢ fine can keep a fellow in his chair!

Jesse Widby was nominated by the Wenatchee Club for District Governor and was subsequently elected. The District Conference was held in Wenatchee in October with Warren Kraft (no relation to our own Dr. Warren Kraft) as principal speaker. He is a member of Rotary International Information Council.

The first Rotary Suit Sale was held and was a great success, both financially and because of the good fellowship that was engendered by the Rotarians who participated. Rollie Day was Chairman and had a lot of fine "experienced" helpers.

A wonderful Christmas program for children was held a few days before Christmas. We didn't know that Rotarians were so prolific. Sam Sumner topped the list with 38 grand children and great-grandchildren.
Rotary entered a beautiful float in the Apple Blossom Festival parade and won third place in our division. Rollie Day was the guiding genius for the project.

A long-neglected Rotary custom of holding firesides at the homes of various Rotarians, where a small group of members would meet for discussion and fellowship, was renewed very successfully as nine Rotarian-hosted groups of 10 to 12 each met.

An inter-club exchange meeting with the Sunnyside Club was held featuring a talk by an exchange teacher in Biology from Australia and, later, Wenatchee put on the program in Sunnyside featuring weatherman, Bill Bierbower. Nine ROTA boys from New Zealand, sponsored by Rotary Clubs of New Zealand, were our guests. Several of them spoke and gave very interesting description of their country, its people, their business and social habits, the various industries, their economic problems and hopes for the future. It is always a welcome program when foreign students come to us.

The Apple Seed featured cartoon pictures of prominent Rotarians nearly every week, done by that famous artist, A. Nony Mous.
Rotarians beat the Lions Club in a golf match at the Country Club.

This year we had some outstanding speakers such as: Eva Anderson, reporting on her trip to Europe; Rt. Rev. Stephen F. Bryne, Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Olympia, on the philosophy of Thanksgiving; Jay Eller on the social significance of "Sputnik"; Ernest Robert Rosse of Philadelphia, a speaker of national reputation and very entertaining, at a Ladies' Day Program; Marshall Dana from Portland gave a stirring program outlining the future in store for Wenatchee.

Bud Clunis, Scoutmaster of the Rotary sponsored Boy Scout Troop of handicapped boys, was selected "Man of the Year" by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Ralph Wood, longtime Secretary and Bulletin Editor, passed away as did Charter Member, Frank Beatty.

Another $1,000 was raised to help our student continue his medical studies at Northwestern.

A teen-age dance at Pioneer Gym was sponsored by the Youth Service Committee as a service project during Apple Blossom weekend.

All in all President Don's year was a very successful one.
