The induction of Leo Lowe to the Past Presidents' Club proved to be very hilarious. At another meeting we ate the worst meal in the history of Rotary lunches which was atoned for the following week by a free lunch to make up for the poor one. There was a highly successful meeting to entertain the teachers at the Country Club on September 10. The colored boy, who was president of the high school student body, attended Rotary for one semester as high school representative. Mystery man of the Week, presented by Rotarian Monte Johnston, was very well received for several weeks. Each week a disguised Rotarian sat at the head table and rarely were we able to penetrate his disguise. Jack McGuire was in charge of the Christmas Party on December 22. The president this year thought he was doing all right until his last meeting. At this time not only did all Rotarians unite to see that Bill Elder was properly deducted from office, but the Kiwanis Club was called on for help to see that the deduction was permanent.
The Pie-baking Contest during Apple Week was sponsored by Rotary and promoted by Leo Lowe, Fred Crollard, Jack McGuire and Eldon Miller. The apple pie-eating contest was won by Len Wooton whose picture was in the Daily World and Rotary Magazine.
The Board of Directors and Wenatchee Rotary Foundation Board met at Scout A Vista for lunch and to acquaint these members with the Scout camp largely made possible by Rotary. On May 24 we sponsored the high school driver's test. Much work was done on this successful and worthwhile program by Kuch Kuchenreuther and Joe Wood and 15 other Rotarians who acted as judges.
The December 21 silver offering for Salvation Army netted $224.49. The Wenatchee Rotary Foundation presented $500 checks to the Boy Scouts and YMCA. We sponsored Ola Gjestrud as a student at Wenatchee Valley College, paying his tuition for one semester. Ola was an outstanding skier. On January 31 a Chinese Auction was held by John Rutherford and his committee who auctioned off a $54 gift certificate, donated by Myron Foster, which raised $233 for the polio fund. The changed policy on student loans made loans available to high school graduates who were going to college at a reduced interest rate from 5% to 3%
Fred Crollard gave us such a good and timely talk on Americanism that he was invited to give his talk to eleven other clubs in our District. President Raymond Allen of the University of Washington was the speaker for the joint service clubs meeting December 28 at the Masonic Hall. On May 1 we met with other service clubs to hear Governor Arthur Langlie. Herb Capozzi, Rotary Fellowship student, talked to us on May 8. It was a wonderful talk by a wonderful man who proved the value of our International Rotary Foundation.
The international meeting was held at Vernon, B. C. Sid Woodcock as District Governor held the district assembly at Spokane and district conference at Yakima. Ed Smith was elected District Governor, the first from our club.
On January 31 a delegation from our club attended the Grand Coulee Dam Club's third anniversary meeting. Wenatchee Rotarian, Loren Bowman, gave an excellent speech.
Successful Fireside meetings were held at Rotarian homes. They are a good way of promoting Rotary fellowship and information and should be continued. In our club, affairs went along smoothly with full cooperation of officers and committees and members. Special mention should go to Eldon Miller who, as program chairman, brought us so many good speakers and entertainers; also to Jack Maguire as chairman of social and recreational committee.
Rotarian Edgar Widby was named "Man of the Year." A group of Rotarians gave talks to all high schools of Chelan County on some phrase of American government and our American way of life.
