DONALD W. "Don" MOOS

Don Moos was elected to the Washington State Legislature in 1959 and served four terms as a member of the House of Representatives before being appointed to the position of Director of Agriculture in 1965. He later served Washington State as Director of Fisheries (1975-1977) and as Director of Ecology (1981-1985).

Moos was Director of Cabinet Affairs and Special Assistant for Natural Resources (1973-1975) for Governor Daniel J. Evans when the Indian Fishing decision (U.S. v. Washington) was handed down by U.S.District Judge George Boldt on February 12, 1974. One year later Governor Evans selected Moos to head the Department of Fisheries to direct its policies in compliance with the myriad of conflicting state and federal court orders and to seek resolution of the festering rebellion amongst the sports and commercial fishermen who sought to either overthrow the decision or disregard its provisions of allocation.

From 1978 until 1981, Don was employed by the Chelan, Douglas and Grant County P.U.Ds as Fisheries Co-ordinator.

Moos presently serves on the staff of United States Senator Slade Gorton as Senior Policy Advisor, with emphasis on agriculture, ecology, water and fisheries. He is also Hearings Examiner for Douglas County.

Editor's note: In October 1942, with the outcome of WW2 uncertain, Don dropped out of his Sophomore year at Washington State University to volunteer for induction into the US Army.

Don is a veteran of the WW2 European Theater of War. He saw action the Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhine River Campaign. He holds the Combat Infantry badge, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

He is married to the former Parmalee Brouillard. They are the parents of Merry-K. Moos, who is an Associate Professior at the University of North Carolina, and of Bill Moos, who serves as the Director of Athletics at the Univeristy of Oregon. Don and Parmalee have five grandchildren.
