REED JOHNSTON

While visiting with Reed, the interviewer soon observed that this quiet man's life has been one of service to his country, his family, his church, his community, the fruit industry and to Rotary.

Starting with 4 years in the U.S.Army, 3 of which were on the Army's only floating supply depot in the South Pacific, delivering emergency weapons and supplies to invasion force beachheads on Saipan, New Guinea, the Philippines and Okinawa, Reed now provides TLC for Earlene, his life's companion who is recovering remarkably from an November 4, 1999 stroke.

After the war years, Reed decided that his future lay in Wenatchee rather than Arkansas and was employed for 3 years as a foreman at Wenoka Growers. Subsequently his career included 34 years at Welch Apples, Inc., where he was the General Manager for 15 years and Corporate President for 7 years, retiring from that position in 1983. Subsequently, Reed served in management at Stemilt Growers, Inc. and as CEO and President of Pacific Fruit Growers, Packers/Shippers Inc.

Since joining The Rotary Club of Wenatchee in 1970 Reed has become a Paul Harris Fellow and has chaired many committees, including Fellowship, Classification, Sergeant-At-Arms, Chaplain and Interclub, and in this year of 2000 is, for the 6th year, leading the club's involvement in manpower support for the April "Ridge-To-River Race".

Reed has served as President or Chairman of Christian Businessmen's Associations and has frequently been given project assignments by his United Methodist Church.

In addition to being a Rotary member and Past President of the Wenatchee Rotary Foundation, Reed has been a Wenatchee Valley College Advisory Board member and Past-President of the Wenatchee Valley Traffic Association.

Reed and Earlene have two grown daughters and four grandchildren.
