John T. "Jack" Evans, Jr.

Jack and Susan Evans came to Wenatchee in 1996, when Jack became the new President and CEO of Central Washington Hospital. They had moved from Fresno, California, where Jack had been the Chief Operating Officer of Community Hospitals of Central California.

About the change, Jack said, "I came to Wenatchee because my job in Fresno was a "turnaround" situation. That hospital system's bonds had been downgraded twice, and it was heading out of business real fast. We turned it around very successfully, but after that was over, I needed a better environment."

Jack's career path began with high school, on a Scholastic/Athletic Scholarship, at The Mercerberg Academy, Mercerberg, Pennsylvania and college at West Virginia University, receiving a BS in Business Administration in 1966.

While employed full-time as Public Health Analyst in 1966, in the other Washington, Jack developed statistical data for "The Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health," while also going full-time to graduate school, obtaining an MBA degree in Hospital Administration from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

By this time he already had two years of hospital administration experience, as Administrative Resident at Prince George's General Hospital in Cheverly, Maryland.

In 1969, Jack began two years in the US Army Medical Service Corps during which Captain Evans served as Assistant Chief of Military Personnel at Valley Forge General Hospital in Pennsylvania followed by a tour of duty as Detachment Commander of the 24th Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam.
In Vietnam, Jack served at the 24th Evac with Wenatchee Valley Clinic Neurosurgeon, Dr. Carl Mead.

For the next 2 years, following the military service, Jack became Assistant to the President of The Greater Southeast Community Hospital, with responsibilities for budgeting and for solving operations problems.

1974 was an important year for Jack, as he traded the beltway for the left coast, and became Assistant Administrator at the Peninsula Hospital and Medical Center in Burlingame, California. His five years there included purchasing and installing the first total in-house computer system.

The next year was even more important...Susan from Long Island and Jack from West Virginia met in San Francisco. They recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

12-years as Chief Executive Officer at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center in Lancaster, California, (where a handsome President of Wenatchee Rotary Club was born), began in 1979. By the time Jack left, the full-service, acute care hospital had grown from 184 beds to 341, with over $185,000,000 in gross revenues.

Prior to Wenatchee, Jack was Chief Operating Officer of Community Hospitals of Central California, with responsibilities for 3 hospitals and 3 convalescent hospitals. He was also President and CEO of the Corporation's flagship hospital, Fresno Community Hospital. Total corporate net revenue in 1994, under his direct responsibilities, was $228,000,000.

Now in Wenatchee, Jack says, "We have loved Wenatchee. We were able to quickly make new friends and have enjoyed every aspect of the area...the skiing, the kayaking, the back-country camping with the 4-wheel drive pickup - whatever is seasonal here in Wenatchee."

Scuba diving, cycling, computers, photography, and especially travel, fill Jack and Susie's free time together.

  • Jack's professional organization associations include:
  • Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives
  • Board member of the Washington State Hospital Association
  • Program Development Committee of the Estes Park Institute
  • Chairman of North Central Washington Hospital Council
  • Board of National Council of Community Hospitals

Jack joined Wenatchee Rotary in 1997 and is now a Paul Harris Fellow and a Paul Scea Fellow with 16 years in Rotary, so far.
